| Peterson
Creek Nature Park is a protected
watershed park covering over 423 hectares stretching from Columbia
Street to the Sahali neighborhoods to Highway 5A. The network
of gravel trails in the park explore grasslands and creek beds
while navigating around mountain cliffs, steep elevations and
rock bluffs.
The eco systems vary in the park from "riparian"
like areas to desert grasslands. The park is a good opportunity
to explore some of the plants and wildlife found in these types
of eco systems. Plants like wheatgrass, balsamroot and sagebrush
cover the grassland areas while Saskatoons, cottonwood and aspen
trees thrive in the "riparian" regions.
The trail system in the Peterson Creek Nature Park
follows the creek for 30 kilometres. The trail system consists
of two main trails and many offshoot side trails. The Tom Moore
and the Billy Miner North Trails are the two main trails in the
park. The Tom Moore extends from one end of the park to the other
and acts as the main transportation route, while the Billy Miner
North Trail veers off the main trail and explores along cliffs
and viewpoints.
Some of the side trails in the park include the
Grasslands Loop, Bridal Veil Falls, Mariposa and Escape Trails.
Each trail offers a unique experience. Some trails provide viewing
benches along the way, while on the more advanced routes with
elevated sections there are resting benches. The highlights of
the park include the Bridal Veil waterfall and the many scenic
viewpoints.
The main entrance to the park is off of Glenfir
Drive in the heart of Kamloops. The gravel parking lot is large
and there is a suspension bridge leading to a large grassy field
and picnic tables. From here the Peterson Creek Nature Park also
links to the popular Rivers Trail.
The trail system caters to hiking, biking, dog
walking, sightseeing and wildlife viewing. Mountain bikers must
stay on the path and never deviate from the path. Park signs and
trail maps mark the trailheads in the park. Due to the exposure
of hiking out in the open, under the sun, it is wise to bring
water, sunscreen and to wear a hat.
The Peterson Creek Nature Park is a prime walking
destination to view bird life. Northern Flickers, House Finches,
Robins, Spotted Towhees and Dark-eyed Juncos can be seen in the
lower sections of the park. Vesper Sparrows and Western Meadowlarks
roam the open grasslands. Clark's Nutcracks, Yellow-rumped Warblers,
Red crossbills, Mountain Chickadees and Pygmy Nuthatches can be
seen in the forests.
