| Ashcroft
, B.C. is a small, country
western town nestled in a valley near the Thompson and Bonaparte
Rivers surrounded by grassland hills covered in sagebrush, cactus
and tumbleweeds. The community of Ashcroft, BC is in Gold Rush
Country and is referred to as Tuk Tuk Chin by the Shuswap First
Nation People.
In 1862, the town was later
named after a stagecoach stop called the Ashcroft Manor Roadhouse.
In the early years of the community the main employer was a tomato
cannery which operated until 1957. It was then that the main industry
of Ashcroft started operating in the form of a copper mine.
Visitors to the small community of Ashcroft will
enjoy such activities like lake and river fishing, off roading,
birdwatching, horseback riding, hiking, rock climbing, river kayaking
and mountain biking in the summer months. In the winter months
people enjoy snowmobiling, cross country skiing and ice fishing.
One of the best trail systems in the region for
off roading on a motorbike is the Ashcroft Motorcycle Route. Rock
Climbing hot spot destinations include Cornwall Hills and Oregon
Jack Provincial Park. Snowmobilers in the winter like to head
out to the trails and roads around Little OK Lake.
The community enjoys a selection of service facilities
for travelers including accommodations, campgrounds, horse ranches,
grocery stores, retail stores, museum, drug stores, banks, gas
stations, a liquor store and a post office.
Walking the sidewalks of downtown Ashcroft one
will notice a good selection of historic artifacts on display
from the old western and mining days. At the entrance of the community
is a historic stagecoach and a fire hall.
Opposite main street Ashcroft is a small interpretive
pioneer park - Millennium Park
- with many historic artifacts and historic building structures
on display.
